Direct Vision Standard – what you need to know
Greater London DVS
The Direct Vision Standard is enforced by TFL. The legislation requires all goods vehicles weighing more than 12 tonnes to possess a permit. Without a valid permit, you may receive a penalty charge (PCN) of up to £550 as an operator as well as £130 for the driver.
Direct Vision Standard and HGV Safety Permit Scheme
You need to obtain a safety permit before operating a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) in most of Greater London. You now need to install the Progressive Safe System for zero, one and two star-rated HGVs.
The DVS measures how much an HGV driver can see directly through their cab windows. This is then expressed as a star rating from zero (limited) to five (good).
